Cristina L. White recounts her struggle between the dictates of a religious upbringing and the call to be true to one’s sense of self. Told that following her heart would condemn her to hell and damnation, she listened instead to an inner voice, one attuned to “…my spiritual body and the canon of my bones.” In her transition from compliance to nonconformity, Cristina shares her sexual awakening, spiritual transformation, and political affinities—a trinity that fueled her change from good Catholic girl to an out and open gay woman of faith.

“The first paragraph had me. Librarian

Cristina Luisa White is an author and artist who writes plays and poetry, fiction, essays, and memoir. Her most recent work, Sex and Soul: A Memoir of Salvation is about the quest to reconcile body and soul. It recounts her struggle between the dictates of a Catholic upbringing and the call to be true to her own sense of self, and affirms the worth of each person's search to understand and claim their own authenticity. Print and eBook editions of Sex and Soul are available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble; the print edition can be ordered through your local bookstore.

Cristina was a featured writer at the 2018 Literary Arts Oregon Writers of Color Spring Showcase, and her essays, poems, and fiction have appeared in several publications, including Orion Magazine, VoiceCatcher, Willawaw Journal, and Gay Flash Fiction. Her first book, authored as Cristina Ismael, was The Healing Environment, a pioneering work in the field of healing design. She appeared in and contributed original material to the play Coming Out at On the Fringe in Los Angeles.

In Oregon, two of her short plays have been staged: Annalee's Bench by Red Octopus in Newport and Weather Guy at the Majestic in Corvallis. Weather Guy and the re-named Park Bench also received full productions as part of Love in Unexpected Places at the Majestic. She has written and directed two short films, Disappearing Act (adapted from A Puff of Orange Smoke by Lael Littke) and Tallulah, both produced by independent companies in Northern California.

In the spring of 2015, with the help and support of Jimbo Ivy at the Majestic Theatre in Corvallis, Cristina founded the Majestic Playwright's Lab, a place for local playwrights to present and discuss their new work for the stage. John Byrne, her colleague and fellow playwright, helped establish the Lab and made it a welcoming place for playwrights, actors, directors and interested community members.

In February 2016, the Lab had its premiere production at the Majestic. Love in Unexpected Places presented six short plays by local playwrights to enthusiastic audiences who spread the word and gave Love a very successful debut run.

The second Lab production, a Festival of 10-Minute Plays, featured the work of eight playwrights who won the Lab's statewide 10-Minute Play Competition. The Majestic Eight was presented at the Majestic in April 2017. It was capped with an Awards Ceremony and a lively Q&A with the playwrights, cast, and the two directors, Leigh Matthews Bock and Laura Blackwell.

Plans are underway for The Majestic Eight 2019, to be presented on the Majestic main stage on April 20, 2019. The winning scripts of the Lab's 2018 10-Minute Play Competition will be directed by Leigh Matthews Bock and Mary Jeanne Reynales.

Cristina has written one musical and four plays for children. Her musical Rules received a workshop presentation at the Koret Auditorium in San Francisco, and all four plays were produced and toured throughout the SF Bay Area. Her play Thumbelina won a First Place Award from the San Francisco Children’s Theatre Association and The Enchanted Journey, published by Samuel French, has been produced throughout the United States and Canada.

Her work as a visual artist includes the cover design for The Healing Environment and the frontispiece illustration for The Book of Jobs by Skye Atman. She has shown her art and photography in San Francisco at the Cartoon Art Museum, the BJE Library, and the Blue Danube Café, and in Corvallis at the Majestic Theatre and the Giustina Gallery, Oregon State University. Her photos have been published in The Spirit of Corvallis and Atención San Miguel.

She is currently an artist with the art-poetry collaboration Beyond Words, created by Terri Thomas, featuring visual and sound-scape creations inspired by Terri's poetry. To date, Beyond Words has been exhibited at the Benton County Historical Museum in Philomath, Lincoln City Cultural Center, the Alsea Public Library and, in Corvallis, Pegasus Art Gallery and Studio Beatrice.

Along with Write Away, her blog on this site, Cristina writes at Zen Crunch, her blog at www.cristinawhite.wordpress.com
